alucard 14 Posted July 18, 2012 Report Share Posted July 18, 2012 it varies between cars, my old petrol had a chain, but my new one has a belt... the only way to know is to pull the valve cover off and take a look, the service interval for the deisel cambelt is 54 000 miles but it will likely last a little longer... welcome to the forums james Quote Link to post Share on other sites
chief tool 44 Posted August 1, 2012 Report Share Posted August 1, 2012 All the Mazda diesels are belt drive except for the latest 2.2L version. And yes, its a good idea to change the belt as they're all interference motors. The 2001 is around the time when Mazda went from mechanical direct injection to CRDi. If yours is an old Mechanical one, then your belt could be a gates 5510XS, not cheap, but not expensive considering what it is. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
