1999 Ford Escort Zx2

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, this is my ford escort. ZX2 trim package, 2.0 zetec engine, 5spd.. not fast enough. A buddy of mine is working on putting a klze into his escort right now, which will apparently bolt in with the MX-3 motor mounts. He just did the same with an escort wagon, but he put a KLDE into that one. Seeing him do this, is what made me want to put a KLDE into mine and hopefully turbo it in a year or two. My buddy with the other zx2 is going built motor with a lot of nitrous, it should be interesting.

They look much better before being reduced in size, haha. Also, i know the rims are bad, i am getting rid of them. I am giving a friend 300 dollars, and those rims for a KLDE, with 5 speed tranny and centerforce clutch.

I am pretty surprised that there is no interest at all in this.

My buddy just got his KLZE into his zx2. It fits! The wiring is going to be a pain I guess, because the zx2 has different connectors then the 2nd gen escort. He is just going to cut the connectors on his mx3 harness and then put the appropriate zx2 connectors on. The ones in the engine bay match. The ones in the interior don't. Oh well.. couldn't be as easy as it sounded, could it? haha

Pictures of the ZE on page 7. Check it out.

Although its cool and what not, I don't know if its worth the hassel. Wouldn't it have been easier to buy a MX3 which weighs just a tiny bit less than the Escort?

Stick a V8 in it and you'll have my attention...

The v8 won't fit in without tube framing.

There are a few reasons to do this. It's really pretty easy for one, nothing so far has been that hard according to ryan.

Next, the the stock engine and tranny have been pretty much pushed to their limits, and there isn't much aftermarket for the tranny. Then engine can be built pretty easy but the differential just has no options.

This is going to be a hell of a lot more reliable then a turbo setup, for sure, and just as fast.

I prefer the zx2 styling over the mx3, a lot. Ryans car is a show car already, he has a lot of exterior work done and it looks amazing. Why throw all of that away just to start again with a new car? He has the show aspect of it down, and he had quite a bit of go. He wants more. So do I.

This swap is giving us a head start on every one who keeps the 4 cylinder. With the de/ze we will be able to destroy full bolt on zx2s. Then once engine or turbo work starts, it's going to be more a matter of traction then making it fast.

I personally have two zx2s. I love them both. So my reasoning for this instead of the mx3 is the fact that I love the way the car looks and feels. For him, it probably has a lot to do with how much money he already has into it. Also, with the way most of the zx2 owners are about doing things to their car.. Me, ryan and a guy from canada will be the only three to have ever done it. So there is the aspect of being unique also. For me, it's mainly just the fact that I love the car. Another thing is, like I said, how weak the differential is and how much that alone holds the escort back. Soo, we are eliminating that factor.

"Worth the hassel". Is anything that any one ever does to their cars, "Worth the hassel"? See.. with what you are saying, I should be questioning why you are modding the 626. I mean, there are supras and rx7s out there.. is what you are doing really worth the hassel? :P

Now that I've written a book.. haha. The reason I am here though is so I can learn more about the engine, and how to make them really go. If you were wondering anyways.

Edit- Btw.. V8 swap here> http://teamzx2.com/index.php/topic,288.0.html

There is light modding and than hardcore modding. I've done basic stuff to make it more suitable to me (interior and what not) and added some OEM things to it. Not much modding actually. It isn't anything close to what you all want to do.

Eh, I could bash this all I want, but I'm chosing not to. Good luck. Hope you don't junk your car.

That 351 Escort is pretty cool.

If you're gonna do the swap on your OBDII car, take the harness from a '96-'97 Mx6, 626 or PGT V6 since the DE is all you're wanting. It would be alot easier, anyways. Looks like a fun project, so keep us posted. I like stuff like that

That's exactly what I am doin man. Problem is, the plugs for some of the interior stuff doesn't match. It's all the same stuff, it's just a different harness. So we gotta cut the wires and redo it. Not a huge deal really. I am getting a whole 626 for 600 dollars, so I'll have everything I need. Once I'm done with it I'll probably post it up for sale for a few hundred bucks as a parts car.

I'll definitely be keeping you guys posted though. I'll post up whenever ryan gets a bit further also.

Well, it's been a while.

Some deals on turbo parts came up that I couldn't pass up and I'm going that route instead.

Ryan on the other hand has everything in and finished, minus the wiring. He has all of the new connectors on the harness he just needs to plug all of it in. He's feeling lazy I guess. I'll be back when he's finished.

after my tiburon got totalled, and i was just sitting on $8k to spend, i seriousely looked at the last year zx2, and even test drove one with thoughts of the KL in my head.

but i couldnt get past the interior. its WAY to cheap looking. i just couldnt see past just that fact, its what i see more then any other part of the car.

best KL swaps are for sure mx3's, or early 90's escort GT's.

if i was gonna do it, id find a clean rare mx3 GS SE, and ZE swap it.

I looove early 90's escort gt's. I simply LOVE they way they look.

And with a KL and some good suspension work, it would be, just intense.

It would look a little something like this:

Be glad you didn't get one. They are a fun little car to drive and all, but they make so much noise. Everything rattles, etc. It is insane.

I am getting an 03 front end, same as the year you were looking at. It looks good in combo with my sides and rear. I'm pretty amped about it.

As for Ryan, he was under the car doing some stuff and one of the mounts was bad. Broke while he was under there and it scared the piss out of him I guess. Some one botched up the mount and it broke. He is looking for a new one right now, and as soon as he finds it I'm sure he'll get back to work. He got working on it because i went to his house and gave him some bs about it messin with him, haha. He got a bit more of the wiriing done too.

The engine.. it looks amazing in the car. I have a picture of it that I'll post up when I get a chance.

The egt thing.. my dad has a really beat and broken second gen excort lx. Maybe when it blows I'll find a klde in the yard some where and swap it for the fun. It'd be a hell of a sleeper. Covored in rust.

believe it or not, there's one exactly like that here in rockford. his name in colony kid on probetalk, and has a modded KL early 90's pink escort GT sitting on Ksport coilovers. you really cant get much more sexy then that! lol

Ryan finished his swap. Just needs tuning and a few things in the interior wired up.. If anyone is going to be at sport compact at carlisle, you can see it there I think.

1st starting.

If it were 97& up escort zx2 i would go with the klg4 it uses the same EEC-5 EMS plus it has more official documented power. It gets rid of the dizzy in favor of EDIS-4 ignition Coil pack set up. It uses solid VLA. Probably the most reliable delivery of power of all the KL series. Its also the final KL
