You know... I read about this a few weeks ago... Someone on vwvortex did it to their engine when rebuildin - have not heard results...

I am personally skeptical... I don't have a background in this area at all, but you will for sure make some hot spots in those grooves... I'm also not so sure how it will swirl anything - when you compress something, it is done evenly in all directions.

Mazda has something called variable tumble control - on the new 2.3l engine. Its basically the VRIS system, but it only covers half of the intake tract just before the valves. It causes a slight swirl and increases intake velocity. Its only closed at low engine speeds. Mazda has not claimed any power/energy efficiency increases, just for emissions efficiency... Just some food for though :P
