Picked up this 2nd 86 626 Turbo Coupe yesterday after a fluke find on Gumtree for $250 ! . Bought it from the original owner and was going to use it for spares for my other identical coupe but this one has all original history with it etc so will use my other car for restoration parts instead. The car has been maintained mechanically up until 2016 and is totally original except for the wheels on it as he swapped them from a wreck he had as the tires were good on these rims.

It ran fine without any problems on the 800km journey home, the a/c wasn't working so was a hot trip back...

It has high Km's but still runs fine. A tribute to Mazda quality

95' 626 LX V6 Project

https://mazda626.net/topic/47653-95-626-lx-v6-project/?do=findComment&comment=400338

I recently obtained a 95' 5-Speed V6 626. This is my first manual car, and I bought it as a leaner. I got it at 168k Miles, running and driving for $250. It needs $180 in parts to pass inspection, but I've been too lazy to order, and install them.

I also found out the Speedometer broke, with some research it looks like the VSS might have gone bad. I'm trying to find one that isn't $135. Meanwhile the care needs a lot of TLC, it's missing paint, the upholstery is ripped, and it smells like it's been outside for a while. Most of the windows barely move, might need to check the motors.

I will post pictures really soon.

I'm planning to make a few modifications to it, add a Short RAM Intake, and possibly put a Cherry Bomb on it.

Old Six: a '95 ES-V6 Story

https://mazda626.net/topic/47576-old-six-a-95-es-v6-story/?do=findComment&comment=400093

I'll go ahead and introduce myself, I'm Ty'Eira Marie Morrison. This is my recently acquired Hunter Green Mica Metallic '95 ES-V6 automatic, affectionately named "Old Six". I've had the pleasure of owning this wonderful Mazda for a good seven weeks now, she's starting to show me that I can have faith in a $600 beater with a heater. I had my doubts about jumping into an automatic 626 at first (seeing as how the reputation of them has resulted in the death of most of these cars), but I ABSOLUTELY had to have a GE platform 626 because of the resemblence of the larger '90-'94 929. So far, in my seven weeks of ownership, I've managed to:

	1) Replace the broken factory cassette player and dealer-installed in-dash CD changer controller (trunk changer was missing, I believe she told me it was 10-disc) with a working cassette unit from a '96 LX and working in-dash CD player from a '94 ES-V6;

	2) Clean up headlights, fog lights, interior, wheels, and paint with a Nu Finish wax job;

	3) replace the busted grille and add a factory lip spoiler from a '96 LX, find a replacement passenger sunvisor, order new headliner material, order a 3-button '90s Ford key fob and Mazda Eternal Flame fob case and program it to the factory alarm system, despite the "PANIC" feature being inoperable.

	Next steps:

Tinted windows, Gold emblem package, new hood, fresh paint w/pinstripe removal, "ES" fender decals, '95+ Shogun PGT blades (aluminum or '97 GTS chrome doesn't matter at this point, since I can find either matching centre caps), new Driftwood seats, wood dash panelling, spare manual transmission/parts, hi-rise spoiler w/CHMSL, and hopefully a spare motor just in case (it makes me so sad about not ever being able to get a Euro lip kit, I really like that kit).

So far, all she seems to need is valve cover gaskets, a new exhaust system and front suspension work. But I'm growing to love this Mazda more and more every day, I can't wait to move and add a matching Hunter Green Mica Metallic MX-6 LS and a BG Protégé to my fleet (yes, this car has released my inner Mazda enthusiasm). This car has been sort of a lifelong bucket list car, and #2 on my list of dream cars because of how underrated it is and how much potential this car has. I've shown a little bit of the transformation I was able to make, since I'm on the parts hunt for two different cars (also have a '93 Pontiac Grand Am GT Quad 4 High Output Sedan I'm working on restoring). So far, the lip spoiler works with the stock look and wheels, but I want to see what she looks like when done. I'm anxiously awaiting the moment this $600 beaten heap is transformed into a $2000 work of vivid art... and I'm proud thus far to be a part of the 626 community.

1984 626 2.0D Swap

https://mazda626.net/topic/47505-1984-626-20d-swap/?do=findComment&comment=399861

How in the world I get myself into these projects.... SMH

I picked up an irwipi (it ran when I parked it), a 1984 Diesel 626 on Thursday. I have a 1988 Mazda B2000 that needs a motor. Perfect. I'm going to swap them. If anyone needs whats left of this 626, its on the Central Coast of CA.

Side saddle to prop swap. Ive gleaned some information from others that the clutch itself does not swap. Its rumored that a 1990 Kia has the clutch I need. Can anyone verify this?

Wiring Harness and ECM. I painstakingly removed the harness. all the relays, fuse block and other necessary items. I could not find the ECM.... i researched it and found that it was somewhere under the dash. I was unable to find any other information. I found a module, under the carpet, but it was very small and it said NGK spark plug company????? It was bolted to a zinc plate so I thought SWEET, I found it. I removed the plate and..... it was just a plate, there was no ECM attached to it.

The motor is out and turns.... I'll replace the timing belt and all the others before I fire it.

I'll pull the vacuum pump for the brakes on the pickup.

	The questions....

Did I simply over look the ECM somewhere??

Are the fuel lines and tank needing to be transplanted as well?

	Thanks in advance.

	I'll post pics later

My attempt at turning an ugly duckling into a swan (1994 GE 626 "Luxury")

https://mazda626.net/topic/47345-my-attempt-at-turning-an-ugly-duckling-into-a-swan-1994-ge-626-luxury/?do=findComment&comment=399378

Given that its coming up to nearly 1 year since I bought the car, and that I've been on the forums for a couple of months I figured it was about time I created a build thread.

	This is my 626, its a 1994 GE Series I 626 "Luxury":

I bought it nearly a year ago (16th October 2016) to fix up in memory of my grandfather, who had recently passed, who had a GE from new, and absolutely adored it. When I bought it it was in a sorry state. The clear coat was peeling (still is, and sadly has picked up a few more bumps and scrapes in the past year thanks to the fact that I live in Sydney, and also the tight turn that I have to make to get into my garage, along with an incident I had a couple of months ago with a dog...), the interior was dirty and full of rubbish and the dash was all bashed and broken, the ignition system was totally shot to Hell effectively making my V6 a V4, it had an exhaust leak (amazingly I only passed two cops on the way home from Gosford, I idled past them both and thankfully didn't get pulled over), and it was also rather unhappy that it had been converted to LPG. Inside it also had that disgusting "old car" smell that some old cars have. It was so bad that I could smell it on my clothes even after I got out. It was a hot day, and I couldn't run the AC due to the "lack of power" issue...it was a rather unpleasant drive home to say the least.

On the drive home I also found out that the brakes were, well, questionable and that the steering rack would fight against you when turning, when driving at over 60 km/h. Pro tip: Never buy if you can't take it on the highway, or at least somewhere where you can get up to highway speeds on a test drive.

First thing I did was to get the exhaust leak fixed so that I could drive it without being heard 3 blocks away and causing a scene, after which the ignition system was overhauled, and all fluids and filters replaced. Then it was off to Bridgestone to get new rubber. The HiFly things on it were dangerous and needed to go, so I went from one extreme to the other, and opted for a set of Potenza RE003's. At the same time I had the steering rack replaced, and brakes sorted.

Afterwards I drove it as-is for the next couple of months, just making sure it was completely sorted mechanically. It was still on petrol/LPG dual fuel at this point. Then in January, it happened. The big breakdown:

I was halfway between Sydney and Nowra, on the way to catch up with a mate when I lost power. Ended up having it towed to an NRMA MotorServe and catching the train back to Sydney. About a month later (!!!), after my constant pestering they finally fixed it. And charged me way too much for the pleasure. And left me with a flat battery. They jump started me, and told me the battery was healthy...I drove back to Sydney, and went to the cinema at my local shopping centre...not knowing that the car was basically running off the alternator. I did notice though that it wasn't quite running right. Did some shopping, saw a movie, got back in the car...nup, dead. The next day I went to Supercheap, bought a battery and went back to the car and fitted it, and drove home. I was about to make a booking with an LPG specialist to have the LPG system ripped out since it had given me too many headaches, and also prevented me from doing a lot of work on the car myself when I had another breakdown several days later, on a main road in Sydney. There was a fire truck behind me, the firies got out and pushed me off the road into the bus lane. I was incredibly embarrassed. I called the NRMA, again and specifically asked to be towed to an LPG specialst. They towed me to a taxi mechanic. Who went on holidays that week and couldn't fit me in. So the car basically sat for a week outside his workshop, unable to move. Pissed off, I called NRMA again and pretended I'd had another breakdown, and got towed to another LPG specialist who got the car sorted out and pissed off the LPG system.

Pissing off the LPG system was by far the best thing I could've done for the car. It was like a whole new car afterwards. The week after, the interior overhaul began.

The interior was given a good clean and completely gutted:

Wiring for the new sound system was installed, as was a bulk pack of Dynamat. Carpet from a 1995 model that was in far better shape was installed. Broken dash parts were replaced. (while the car was off the road I'd been rather busy at the wreckers, I'm pretty much on a first name basis with them now!) Everything got a good go-over with Autoglym Interior Shampoo. The new sound system was installed. As the car started to come back together I was rather proud of myself with how good it was starting to look. Here's a pic of it mostly complete:

And the final product on display at the Mighty Car Mods meet at Eastern Creek earlier this year - it was finished literally 3 hours before the meet!

(and yes, those are the original sales brochures for the 626, and on the dashboard is an issue of Wheels magazine from 1993 where the 626 won Wheels Car of the Year)

About a month later I came across a JDM woodgrain dash trim from a 1994 Mazda Capella. $180ish, but I had to have it. Air freight from Japan to Australia is quick, it was in my car a week later:

I love it. Really adds a touch of class to it. Given that the GE was marketed in Australia as a luxury car, I personally think it should've come with it from factory.

Since then there hasn't been much happening with it. The alternator gave out about a month ago, which I replaced. I'm actually learning how to do everything on this car, I'm doing all my services, repairs and everything myself for the first time, and am rather proud of myself given that the most I've done mechanically in the past has been to check/top up fluids and tyre pressures, and replace a flat tyre. Otherwise, since the LPG was pulled out the car has been solid as a rock. Cruising on the motorway with the AC cranked up, and some nice music playing its amazing to think that 12 months ago the car was as much of a shitbox as it was. While it still looks like crap from the outside, its once again the luxury cruiser that it was intended to be.

As for future plans - the next thing I want to do is to get something done about the paint so I can take it to show and shine days, and have something that actually looks halfway decent. I'm looking at getting Halo EFX applied - in Mazda Ruby Mica, same colour as my grandfather's old 626:

After that...I dunno...*says in his best Tim Allen voice* more power?

1997 Capella S/W with Mazdaspeed goodness

https://mazda626.net/topic/47334-1997-capella-sw-with-mazdaspeed-goodness/?do=findComment&comment=399344

While this is not going to be a project car in the sense of massive engineering transformation, I figured I'd make a build thread showcasing how to make a reasonably nice tidy condition car really stand out and show that, yes you can do stuff to your family car not just the project car and also to prevent this car mingling with my TX5's thread. I needed a car with 7 seats for family duties - a mini van or 4x4 is not happening - I love corners and they don't, top heavy with boat like handling characteristics, no thanks.

Having thought I found one which ended up being a dud - overheated and then it got hit while broke down on the side of the road, I started the search again and found this one. I was very pleasantly surprised when I won the auction at $1,250 as these tend to fetch a fair bit my by almost double the price. This is a 1997 GW Mazda Capella wagon, apparently with Mazda Speed springs and body kit, Jasma rear muffler with a massive tip - surprisingly its very quiet this is what I dreamed about doing but may not have done. I have 140 hp of FS-DE power which could be useful if it was a 5 speed - since my wife drives it it had to be auto.

So here it is, reasonably tidy for an almost 20 year old car with 144,000 kms. One family owned it since it came from Japan in 2005. The interior is very tidy and honestly it still smells like a new car. Exterior needed a wash and a quick hand polish would have helped but its me and I did far more than that. First thing I did was change the oil and filter - easy same location as the TX5. The oil was very dark and overdue by 8 months with 10w40 Penrite semi-synthetic - because FS engines don't like full synthetic so I've heard.

The first pics are from the seller before I got the car. Generally no big dents or catastrophic paint damage - paint is quite dull as you can see its not hard to bring it back. Sure the bumpers have some scrapes - I will touch up and re-clear them too I also need foglamps from a SP20 - or Protege and some monsoon shields for the rear doors. First up is a full cut and polish.

F2t crank walked pics of main bearings

https://mazda626.net/topic/47319-f2t-crank-walked-pics-of-main-bearings/?do=findComment&comment=399244

Hey guys got the oil pan dropped on my 88 626GT and the main all out. I wanted to post some pics of the main bearings seeing how I don't know jack about what I'm looking at lol. Wanted to see if anyone could explain the wear im looking at, if they look normal or what.

A little history of the car is...

had it about two years bought it with a bad atx, swapped it with the mtx the car had 84k miles when I bought it has about 87k since the swap. I was getting a intermitted vibration when I stepped on the clutch with the car in gear and it took me awhile to figure out the crank took a walk. Found this car online in Nelson NZ and instantly fell in love.

While NZ assembled the Mazda 626, the Coupe's were imported fully assembled and apparently only a very small handful came into New Zealand.

Have had many comments locally as pretty much no one seems to have ever seen one, this is the only one I've ever seen either on the road or for sale. I have just purchased a set of 1985 Ford Telstar alloy wheels to fit it, can't locate any factory Mazda wheels yet. Just in the middle of replacing all shocks, complete new front axles, new clutch, water pump & timing belt.

One question i do have is the paint, it's a two-tone gold/greyish brown (faded) and the code on the firewall is QS, but I cannot locate this code in any Mazda paint reference charts.

Can anyone decode that for me?

I did indeed get this car - 1997 GV8 Capella wagon, F8 dohc auto with all the seats from factory. It was the cheapest and the only one with the seats that was auto $700. Smaller so the wife and stepson can drive it, not too bad on fuel, F8 has some power for a stock 4 cylinder and its not a mini van or SUV (bleargh!).

I get it next week. Below is how it would have looked from factory. Once I get it home I'll take some pics. Every single GV wagon of this era has clear coat peeling. This one has it on every panel just about. It has more than the average amounts of car park damage too, dents dings and scrapes. Mechanically it is good aside from a leaky rocker cover gasket which is easy.

Why put in builds? Needs the usual clean and service - all fluids and filter including trans.

Also because I want to *try* get it looking from how it is now to like it should be in that picture - it is the exact color, two tone and everything. It will get a repaint because its just too rough although it might have a bit more orange peel in it because it will be a prep Friday night, prime Saturday morning, flat it back, color it, clear coat on Sunday and done buff it the next weekend, when I do it. Maybe 38J Celestial blue for something different? $300 will get me the paint.

Mods? I have a Mazdaspeed badge for the boot lid on my watchlist. Some 18" alloys no tyres which close in 2 days time and currently on $5 - I know will go up hoping I can get them for a couple of hundred. Maybe if I can find low springs I'll put a set of them in, tint front windows to match the others then it'll be done then. No point in doing performance stuff really its an auto but I like a good handling car.

Lol, i have had several proteges, 323, 626`s and 1 mx6, ive worked on all of them several atx to mtx swaps, to say the least i know my mazdas from a geographical stand point of the cars, i started noticing working in the automotive mechanics field, that they are all very similiar in engineering design, this got my imagination flowing of possibilities, there are many dead end forum post for escorts and proteges, on 5lug and brake conversions, 626, mx6, and probe, do not run into these deadends as commonly, so here is the story.

I reluctantly bought a 95 escort station wagon for way to much, blah blah blah, i hated the car it was ugly it was slow and boring, but it ran good and drove from point a to b, woohoo!!!!, i had the racers itch that i had to scratch so i took it to auto x, had lots of fun, the next year it was time for upgrades, ebay everything, lowering springs, racing clutch, struts, short throw shifter and craigslist rims and tires. It killed it the car was finally something i liked and loved, i wore out the clutch, second gear syncro, and the engine was just getting tired, so i bought a 96 ford probe gt 5 speed car, for $200, it ran good but was in horrible condition, i stripped the probe of all nuts bolts and running and suspension gear, and threw away the carcass, so i have gotten pretty far into this build and i apoligize for lack of pictures on alot of specific stuff, but i will answer as many ?? That you all may have, so what i did was removed the front and rear sub frames, from the scort, drilled new holes in the scort and bolted up both front and rear sub frames from the probe, 5lug conversion and rear disc brake upgrade complete. Front brakes are from 2004 mazda 6, standard information to us here at mazda626.net for front brake upgrade, i know that i could have used mx3 parts to make this easier, but im a glutten for punishment, i adapted the steering linkage from rack to column using the scort column, with a little triming the probe cluster fit in the dash, looking decent, i have to modify the probe xmember and adapt the passenger side engine mount bracket, the benefit is 3" wider track all around, heavier equipment, for the engine to bolt to, also i didnt have to search for a mx3 GS, im overwhelmed with wiring and i need a starting point, anyone got any input?

97 626 v6 mtx

https://mazda626.net/topic/47224-97-626-v6-mtx/?do=findComment&comment=398782

Post your 626 still on the road!!!!

https://mazda626.net/topic/47213-post-your-626-still-on-the-road/?do=findComment&comment=398721

My hoopty 1994 Mazda 626 LX 2.0 5speed Manual

As I currently have 9 pre 1983 Mazdas in my possession, and I am a huge Star Trek franchise fan, it only seemed fitting that I call her "Seven of Nine"!

I had been conversing with her previous owner (of approximately 4 months) on FB, giving him ideas where to find stuff, such as, a towbar. (Might have a couple lying around collecting dust!)

So she sat in the garage collecting dust. In the meantime, the Go Kart bug had bitten him badly, and he needed cash to go racing. He offered her to me and, with a lot of arm twisting to me - seriously,

I bought her. I am SOOOOO GLAD that I did!!!!!!!

Specs are: 2.0L, 3 speed auto with aftermarket air con fitted. And for the Rotorheads out there, the AC pump is actually an Ogura Wankel, so that is as Rotary as this car gets!

As far as condition, the interior, engine bay and boot are beyond belief. The outside is good with a few little surface dents and dings - just enough to give her character without being a complete eye sore!

The dents will be fixed as we go. Anyway......... without further ado, here she is!

Nd28's Boaty '94 929 VIP Work log

https://mazda626.net/topic/46844-nd28s-boaty-94-929-vip-work-log/?do=findComment&comment=397200

This Came About the same way as my 94 MX6, started with an innocent search through CL for a 929, which proved difficult to find actually, they are not around like they used to. Thought my 92 MX6 GT was rare LOL!

There is was only 300+ miles away(there was another one in California for $5K), the cleanest 929 I've ever seen for sale.Got in touch with seller right away, leaned the history of the car and revived a few videos showing the engine running/interior exterior and underside of the car. Sold!!!

Went to pick it up the a few days later , long trip!

This is starting to sound like a broken record but, I've always liked and wanted a 90's 929 yes even tho they only came Automatic, this is truly the only exception for me as I am an MTX guy.

	Besides , it's RWD!!!!!!!

They guy I bought it from is an Acura/Honda mechanic who bought it with 50K miles from the original owner 6 years ago, the car was obviously cared for. Currently has 110K miles and it's in very good shape.

For those who are not too Familiar with the 929 this is the HD generation with the JE48 (JE-ZE) 3.0L DOHC V6 engine that supposedly makes 205HP/200Trq 9.2:1 compression. Weights in at 3600 lbs. Hefty but not bad for a car this size actually, cool fact: the hood is made of Aluminum. Has Auto climate control, Solar panel sunroof, full leather power seats and many neat features, Mazda's Flagship at the time.

1989 Mazda 626 GD LX

https://mazda626.net/topic/46774-1989-mazda-626-gd-lx/?do=findComment&comment=396846

Sup there I want to share my humble Mazda 626 GD powered by 2.0 engine with carb and LPG system. Summary:

Unboxed, updated firmware, and mock4x Samsung 850 evo's are being shipped down to the server in NC, along with a snazzy raid card that can give us 2gb/s readwrite. :) Performance and reliability will be stellar. Reads will be 4x faster and writes up to 20x faster. About $450 in parts, but TOTALLY worth it. My father bought her back in '99 while it looked like a train wreck and he and I have built her up since then. She's fast and light on fuel as well. Since he passed on a few years back, I've been building it up further on a strict budget since I'm still on school (I've been driving since 9, illegally until 18, but nobody needs to know) and its just the love of my life. I'm trying to keep it mint and still sporty since I'm only 18 now. I know some of you will probably think I'm too young to know this car, but I've been around it all my life. So, I just need opinions on how it looks for now. Its still in progress. Any advice is much appreciated. Its an 1800 Carb, btw. But it runs perfectly against VVL's.

Ssbenss' S 2.0 Build

https://mazda626.net/topic/46003-ssbenss-s-20-build/?do=findComment&comment=392424

So I have a 2001 mazda 626 and at the moment in aiming for complete restore.
I bought the car back in March this year from my brother for 360 after his transmission went out, he had a title loan on it and decided to let it go into collections and decided it wasn't worth keeping, so I picked up his tab and now I got her up and running.
My plan is to use this page as a to do list for future upgrades, a worklog, and I guess I'll see where it goes from there.
So far from purchasing the vehicle as of now the things I have replaced are the following
-New battery $117 2 year warranty pep boys
-oil change/trans drain/fill July 31st,$15 oil $20 trans
-both serpentine belts $20, last ones flew off 1 yr war o'reilleys
-registration/inspection+tt&l $240
- blinker light $25 driver side front Glen and jerrys
-wheel well drivers side $17 current one was broken
That's it so far that I can think of, also was thinking about trying to boost my mpg' s and I'm sure getting my trans fixed would yield the highest mpg's but was thinking about also taking the A/C out and running another belt with an electric motor to it(ideas?) and then connect it to the battvery, maybe throw some other things onto an electric driven belt as well, should bump up mpg by around 3mpg just on ac alone, unless someone knows of a cheaper way to do electric ac.
Also was thinking about replacing the transmission with one more reliable than my cd4e, but the remanufactureds are way too expensive for me (2500 for a jasper trans) maybe in the future?

It was my girlfriends brothers car, but after damaging the exhaust and a few other flaws, he parked the car behind his parents garage. The car was parked there for three years before I was asked if I could help transport it to be crushed. When I saw pictures of it, I knew it was my new project car. And being that money's tight right now, a free project car was a blessing. The first thing I did, was to get it on a trailer, and take it to work. Then it was time to check for rust, I crossed my fingers and guess what, it was clean! Not rust free of course, but hey, it's a 25 year old car that stood near the ocean for 3 years, it's as rust free as it can possibly be. List of what's done: -tear out the tasteless xenon kits -change the sunroof, as the old one was rusted out.
-change the rear lights, just to get through MOT -fixed the exhaust, it was pretty bad, and since the bend over the rear axle was already 2,5" I went with 2,5" from the flexpipe and back. It's still not done, need to move the muffler a bit more forward and add another one, to get the sound where I want it. -changed the fluids, all except the transmission oil, that's on the list of things to do. -fixed the rust on the boot lid, temporarily, going to paint the whole thing with the right color later on. Hey, it's better than rust.
that's what i remember from the top of my head. A few photos never hurt no one right?

Unfortunately the interior did not hold up to well..

The engine is a SOHC FE. The engine was fully rebuilt before the car sat. It's got a ratchet carb (can't remember size) and a half race cam.

Don't mind the excess fuel hose, I rigged up an external fuel pump, just to give the car a start after all these years.

I had plans to install a pair of drafts before letting the car sit.

A pair of solex carbs together with a mikuni manifold for the datsun 910 bluebird. I remember the intake ports matched those of the FE head.

My intentions were to change over to a fuel injected engine. I initally had planned of bringing in a MX6 or Cronos front cut from either Japan or England, with either a FS or KL engine setup, however that deal fell through last December.

After many years of searching for an FE3, an opportunity presented itself very recently. Someone had a FE3 engine and manual transmission for sale, however they did not know the condition of the engine and how well it ran before they obtained it. Given the age of the engine, the way it looked and the price wanted, I regretfully decided to pass up on the offer.

So, I am stuck with what I have at the moment. As of now, the car starts fine but will not idle, carb may need some servicing...hoepfully something minor. I may even attempt to install the solex carbs.

But before that, I do remember having one issue before letting the car sit, and that was a leaking brake junction box:

I will have to look into this for a replacement or a substitute.

Magnumload Build Topic

https://mazda626.net/topic/45533-magnumload-build-topic/?do=findComment&comment=387720

First time poster, been lurking the forum since I got my 626 a couple weeks ago. I want to keep a rolling project for my car as well as ask questions as I venture further into my endeavor. First, a little background. Up until about 3 weeks ago, I was cruising around in a 94' Oldsmobile Royal 88 LSS, the only year of LSS that didn't have a supercharger. .

On my lunch break at work, I go to the gas station, turn it off and put gas in the car. I had a very strong feeling of reluctance about shutting my car off for some reason, but after getting gas and trying to start the car again, no crank, no start. Figured starter, not it. Every other sign pointed towards security system. Well got the car in my garage from some dangerous towing. (3,900 pound vehicle being towed by a S-10 and a tow strap(that broke)) Open the hood, coolant pooled under my plenum, coolant in my power steering pump, not sure how, water pump seals blown, valve cover leaking, and bolts so loose I could breathe on them and they would turn. and a quarter size hole in my bell housing. Hydrolocked/seized motor. No prior warnings, no white smoke, no knock. Just turned it off and it never ever will run again.

Well, that lead me to another car, and as luck would have it, this guy down the road was selling his 2002 Mazda 626 2.0L Auto for $500. Done.

281,000+ miles. First time owning a Mazda. Well, I don't know what it is about this car, but I fell in love with it. This guy rode a guard rail, screwing the whole passenger side up yet this car will drive straighter than any car I've owned. I immediately started doing research and and just generally gaining knowledge. Grabbed the official service manual and started studying that.

In the next few months I want to take the auto transmission out and put a manual in, and replace the engine and engine mounts. I want to put a FS-ZE engine in but do not want to convert everything to OBD 1. So if I can find a FS-DET with low mileage and cheap, I might go that route. Not against 2.5L K motors, just don't really see the benefit in them.

Pretty sure the Transmission was replaced while still under warranty as there is a separate tranny cooler in front of my radiator and is professionally done. Not to mention from what I'm reading, there is no way this Transmission would last to 281,000+ miles.

Until, I can get a possible donor car(for MTX swap), and engine I want to replace my Front and rear bumper and front fender, not sure really how to fix the rear quarter panel as I'm not very proficient with body work. I want to get this engine running as smooth as possible, media blast valve cover, port intake manifold and get new gaskets for throttle body etc. May sound like work for an engine I'm going to eventually replace but this car is now my baby.

I have a few problems with my car that I could use some guidance. Two check engine codes 421 Warm Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) and 455 Evap Emissions gross leak. My car engine shakes quite a bit, at idle, smooths out but still shakes, every so often dips below normal idle rpm of 750-650 and gets to 500 or so as the engine shakes violently trying to keep itself from stalling. No vacuum leaks around the Intake manifold, pcv joint is working correctly. Could a leak in my EVAP line cause the same symptoms of regular vacuum leak? I know it is connected to the vacuum but before it gets to the vacuum it has to get trough the solenoid which isnt open all the time, which wouldn't effect the vacuum system would it?

I have already tested the solenoid, operates perfectly under test scenarios but when connected to the car and its engaged, it clicks as if opening and closing the solenoid repeatedly, slower than fuel injector clicks and HLA faint clicks. But fast enough. I have videos showing examples, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mz2JPe7h4OU&feature=youtu.be I hear hissing and honestly sounds like its coming from under my car around the EVAP and fuel line. Another hissing noise is in front of radiator but sounds like its coming from under the manifold, around cat converter. Also, drop in rpms and light dimming when pressing brake, rolling windows up/down. Battery tests fine. Without lights or anything electrical on, 14.4 V while on. Haven't tested with lights on yet, but willing to bet regulator on Alternator went dead and isn't supplying enough amps to run the car and charge battery. Could be that grounds need to be regrounded or need to add more.

I'm getting my new NGK wires and plugs in the mail in a few days. Going to jack this thing up over the weekend and check out the EVAP lines for myself as well as the exhaust system. Should have the timing checked. Getting a compression test soon. Also, need to replace interior driver side door. Perfect interior besides the driver door, where he just loaded up duct tape and called it a day. SMH.

Any tips and/or help along the way or any knowledge that I should know about being a new 626 owner would be greatly appreciated!

1988 Mazda 626 Racecar Paint Job

https://mazda626.net/topic/45520-1988-mazda-626-racecar-paint-job/?do=findComment&comment=387609

What do you guys think about my backyard paint job ?

So, how about a bit of story?

A long long time ago, my buddy had a silver P5. It was fully bolted with the FS-DE it came with, and he was toying where to go next. He didn't want to fool around with the reliability issues of a turbo on his DD, and what started off as a joke (filling up his inbox with PGT vids) quickly became reality. He was one of the first few to complete his swap, and I couldn't have been more excited.

This is a quote from his old thread.

Ahh, it's a bit obvious I was sort of completely in love with it...

Fast forward, and his silver P5 got cancer, and he parted it out.

Then he got an absolutely immaculate black P5 from GA. Zero rust, just looks like it rolled out of a time capsule. He went to work on the second swap, but after encountering numerous complications (neither of us know squat about wiring), threw in the towel. I ended up buying it from him, and the day I brought it home, May 14, 2013, was the best day of my life.

So now, it's sat in my garage for over a year while I struggled to think what I'd do with the wiring. I think the best route to go is to just do it and learn as I go, instead of trying to get someone else to do it. That way I should have a better understanding and working knowledge should something go wrong in the future.

Mazda 626 Hatch - Labour Of Love

https://mazda626.net/topic/45003-mazda-626-hatch-labour-of-love/?do=findComment&comment=382863

By Request !

I have always liked the 626 Hatch and to date have owned five of them, (pics here) three consecutively at the same time.
Since helping the original MrSpeed (Patrick or Adlorin) put together a supercharger kit for the Probe and testing it first in Australia I kept
building on new ideas and changing my goals.

My end result was my 1995 626 Deluxe Hatch. The deluxe edition came standard with a few extras hat the standard 626 Hatch here in Australia didn't.
Digital Climate Control
Full Leather Interior
My first upgrades consisted on Suspension and braking components as my original goals were always to have a nice looking sleeper so i didn't want the exterior to look much different. I Tried the many different suspension options available for the probe but was never happy with the results. Instead I finally decided I liked the custom feel of the BC Coilover kits with a matching spring combination close to the later released Tein kits. of course knowing i was going boosted i also needed to make sure i could stop safely. This was never going to be a track car but my daily driver, so i didn't need to go fully overboard. The Mazda 6 Breaking system was chosen in the end as it was almost a direct bolt on
but more importantly it looked stock (licensing restrictions can be a biatch sometimes).

If you have a good look you will notice one other big advantage with the coilovers. No nasty perch to rub against the tyres/rims.
hence you can run a wider profile without interference.

The next route was of course some nice rubber that matched the profile of the vehicle and worked well with the suspension. I trialled several 18" setups and for a few years utilised the low profile Pirelli 225/40/ZR18's on a set of 18" Advanti Rims. These looked good and felt good and made sure the car handled like it was on rails. I encountered one minor problem though. every time I went on a cruise and run across poor roads with many potholes or rough surfaces I was continually scratching up the rims (not to mention you felt every bump) and having to spend $$$ fixing the damage.

Eventually I downgraded in size to a 17" Mazda 6 Rim running 235/45/17, this is what I'm still running today and gives a nice stance as well as excellent performance yet doesn't scrub out every time I hit a pothole (no sore butt cheeks now).

(here it is after some more panel work in the shop)

The original motor was of course a KLZE auto with custom exhaust , (ebay headers with a custom catback running 2.5" pipes with redback CAT and muffler). but the auto just had to go. That was the next conversion.

I shopped around for another donor vehicle with an MTX transmission and upon finding it pulled the necessary bits to convert this to manual. The only problem I encountered was the wiring loom. Being the deluxe edition it had far more wiring than the stock vehicles to utilise the digital climate control. So I had to use a 93 loom and dismantle the stock loom to match pin for pin what was needed without the ATX extras. Now that was fun (sarcasm).

This then became my daily driver for a while until my other plans came to fruition. A KLG4 Hybrid supercharged engine.
But until then I simply stuck with a SC KLZE using an Eaton M62 in the AC location.

Fabrication stages of the AC Bracket

The same process but showing the first overdrive Crank Pulley that was CNC'd by MR Speed (Patrick), again a lot of assistance and co-operation from many members
went into the fruition of these projects.

A comparison shot of the OEM 36-1 timing pulley next to the overdrive pulley. This increased
the Eaton's Boost from 4.5psi to 8psi without the IC

Around the same time (2006) a member on Probetalk posted his findings on a new set of custom rods that could increase the longevity of a boosted KL engine. the specs listed below
H-Beam style rods; pretty much the industry standard for cost effective high performance applications
Machined from 4340 chromoly steel forgings
Piston pin bushing left undersized for hand pin fitting
Finish ground on Sunnen cross-grinders
Millenia-S size piston pin bore
Millenia-S/KL size crankshaft end bore
Millenia-S center to center length
Bolts are ARP 8740 series with 12 point heads and have been increased from 8mm diameter to 7/16

Learning To Do Basic Car Things (This Is Diy Cheap As It Gets)

https://mazda626.net/topic/44955-learning-to-do-basic-car-things-this-is-diy-cheap-as-it-gets/?do=findComment&comment=382222

So I've got my Mazda 626 1998 2.0L Diesel GF off my brother. Well, it is a rust bucket indeed and it has many problems (like it starts with a screwdriver and has no working locks). I'll be posting in this thread things I work on in my Mazda.
Bare with my shaky hands and bad quality of work, I'm trying to learn off this car by trying to fix it.
This will also be really DIY, as I'm using mostly material that is found in my garage or scavenged off junk yards and trash bins.
The things I plan to fix (some are already done and I'll post it)
1) This exhaust pipe thing that shoots out oil:

2) Rusty fenders
3) Car shaking when braking
4) A moderate audio system.
5) A car horn
