Introduces SKYACTIV-X, world’s first commercial gasoline engine to use compression ignition

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation today announced “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030,” a new long-term vision for technology development that looks ahead to the year 2030. As part of the new technology to achieve this vision, the company disclosed plans to introduce a next-generation engine called SKYACTIV-X in 2019. SKYACTIV-X will be the world’s first commercial gasoline engine to use compression ignition.1

Under the original “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom” vision announced in 2007, the company has striven to offer both driving pleasure and outstanding environmental and safety performance. In light of the rapid changes taking place in the automotive industry, the new vision takes a longer-term perspective and sets out how Mazda will use driving pleasure, the fundamental appeal of the automobile, to help solve issues facing people, the earth and society.

The following is an overview of “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030” and the next-generation SKYACTIV-X engine.

	1. Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030

Mazda believes its mission is to bring about a beautiful earth and to enrich people’s lives as well as society. The company will continue to seek ways to inspire people through the value found in cars.

	Earth

Through conservation initiatives, create a sustainable future in which people and cars coexist with a bountiful, beautiful earth

	Mazda’s approach

・ Expand measures for carbon dioxide reduction from a “well-to-wheel” perspective, considering emissions over the vehicle’s entire life cycle

・ Aim to reduce corporate average “well-to-wheel” carbon dioxide emissions to 50 percent of 2010 levels by 2030, and achieve a 90-percent reduction by 2050

・ Achieve this with a policy prioritizing efficiency improvements and measures for cleaner emissions that apply in the real world

・ In line with this policy, continue efforts to perfect the internal combustion engine, which will help power the majority of cars worldwide for many years to come and can therefore make the greatest contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, and combine the results with effective electrification technologies

・ From 2019, start introducing electric vehicles and other electric drive technologies in regions that use a high ratio of clean energy for power generation or restrict certain vehicles to reduce air pollution

	Society

Through cars and a society that provide safety and peace of mind, create a system that enriches people’s lives by offering unrestricted mobility to people everywhere

	Mazda’s approach

・ Develop more advanced safety technologies under the Mazda Proactive Safety philosophy, working toward the goal of eliminating traffic accidents

・ Further enhance safety fundamentals, such as correct driving position, pedal layout and good visibility, and standardize them across all models

・ Promote further standardization of i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety features, which help drivers recognize and assess potential hazards; in addition to Japan, where they are already becoming standard, gradually make these technologies standard in other markets starting in 2018

・ Begin testing of autonomous driving technologies currently being developed in line with Mazda’s human-centered Mazda Co-Pilot Concept2 in 2020, aiming to make the system standard on all models by 2025

・ Using connectivity technologies, create a new business model that enables car owners to support the needs of people in depopulated areas and those who have difficulty getting around

	People

Enhance customers’ mental well-being with the satisfaction that comes from protecting the earth and contributing to society with a car that offers true driving pleasure

	Mazda’s approach

ž Pursue an enhanced Jinba-ittai driving feel that will unlock people’s potential and revitalize them mentally and physically

ž Based on the philosophy of “breathing life into the car,” further develop KODO design to raise vehicle design to the level of art that enriches the emotional lives of all who see it

	2. SKYACTIV-X next-generation engine

	Technological innovations

・ SKYACTIV-X is the world’s first commercial gasoline engine to use compression ignition, in which the fuel-air mixture ignites spontaneously when compressed by the piston

・ A proprietary combustion method called Spark Controlled Compression Ignition overcomes two issues that had impeded commercialization of compression ignition gasoline engines: maximizing the zone in which compression ignition is possible and achieving a seamless transition between compression ignition and spark ignition.

	Features

・ This new proprietary combustion engine combines the advantages of gasoline and diesel engines to achieve outstanding environmental performance, power and acceleration performance.

・ Compression ignition and a supercharger fitted to improve fuel economy together deliver unprecedented engine response and increase torque 10–30 percent over the current SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine.3

・ Compression ignition makes possible a super lean burn4 that improves engine efficiency up to 20–30 percent over the current SKYACTIV-G, and from 35–45 percent over Mazda’s 2008 gasoline engine of the same displacement. SKYACTIV-X even equals or exceeds the latest SKYACTIV-D diesel engine in fuel efficiency.

・ With high efficiency across a wide range of rpms and engine loads, the engine allows much more latitude in the selection of gear ratios, providing both superior fuel economy and driving performance.

Moving forward Mazda hopes to help create a future in which people, the earth and society can coexist with cars, to enrich people’s lives through a car ownership experience that celebrates driving, and to become a brand with which customers feel a strong emotional connection.

1 As of August 2017. According to in-house investigations.

2 Mazda’s human-centered self-driving technology development concept. People enjoy driving while being revitalized mentally and physically. Meanwhile the car is driving “virtually” with a firm grasp of the movements of the driver and the car. In unexpected situations, such as a sudden loss of consciousness, the car will override the driver, automatically contact emergency services and drive safely to the most appropriate location.

3 Engine is still under development and figures are subject to change.

Moving back to our dedicated server. Here was the issue, before I didn't know 100% how everything worked on our dedicated server I had help from some really great admins (however i did pay them). The issue was things started breaking and I couldn't fix them because I didn't know front to back how everything worked, and then it would cost money to fix, and then more issues happened, and support would costs more. Additionally the software used to configure the server was expensive in itself. After the past few months I've uped my linux skills, and setup our new dedicated server on the lowlow!.

New Hardware Infrastructure:

increasing server memory/RAM capacity
bios memory speed bump
ACHI from bios better SSD storage access speeds

Current Server
(1X) Quad Core E3-1230 (4 logical cores, 8 hyperthread cores)
16gb Ram
2 X 1 TB harddrives
1GBPS port
Rent
New Server:
(2x) Quad Core L5520 (8 logical cores, 16 hyperthreaded cores)
36gb Ram
2 x 128gb Crucial M4 SSD Hard Drives (Mirrored in raid1)
1 x 1TB Storage disk (for backups)
1GBPS port
12 Month Rent to Own
Why Were Upgrading/moving?
1) More Reliable Company/DataCenter: We've had alot of random outages with VolumeDrive, its gotten pretty old/annoying.
2) Better Support: Dacentec has a much better support reputation than volumedrive,
3) Rent-to-Own: means that 12 months from now the server cost will drop to only having to pay a colocation fee, which will be 30-$50 per month (as opposed to roughly $115-135 rental). Example is if I moved a year ago we would have saved at least $800.00 in server costs.
4) Current I/O Issues: The current server is having alot of backup I/O issues causing some horrible site performance at night when the backups are happening.
5) SSD Speed: SSD performance is top notch and should make the site/server even quicker.
6) Minor Cost increase: We are paying exactly the same amount for the new server as the old server. (Minus a extra 20.00 per month for the second SSD)
7) More CPU Powa! More Logical Processors = Better web server performance for multithreaded applications.
8) More Ram: Honestly we didn't really need the ram, we hardly use everything we currently have [mazda626.net normally uses 2-3gb], but since 36gb is such a ridiculous amount it gives us opportunities to experiment and grow the community in unique ways. One proposal by Xenomorph was to run a racing simulation server for Rfactor 2 http://rfactor.net/web/rf2/, but were open to other ideas too!
Overall:
The benefits are undeniable, and this is a fantastic short term(1 year) investment, because it will save a huge amount in server costs, which means we can invest more into the site and additional projects. Also the speed improvements also should be pretty awesome, I'm hoping for: click = instant pageload

Forum Updated Dec 15, Bunch Of Minor Issues

https://mazda626.net/topic/42528-forum-updated-dec-15-bunch-of-minor-issues/?do=findComment&comment=351492

So with the forum update we got a nice little array of problems

Sorry For The Downtime!

https://mazda626.net/topic/42343-were-back-sorry-for-the-downtime/?do=findComment&comment=349210

Hey everyone and were back online now, sorry for the downtime.
Our server was actually physically relocated to a new server center by our server host, which is why we were down for 24 hours. The server was previously in Florida, and now its located in Pennsylvania, a 984 mile trip ( http://goo.gl/4tmpW )
The server was fully operational at 4:06 PM EST, (5 hours ago)
However the site wasn't automatically available for 2 reasons.

The mazda626 VPS/site failed to autoboot (something I'll be sure to resolve).

I wasn't alerted it was back on because my automatic server checks only check the mazda site not the root server (something I'm also going to fix).

I apologize for the 5 hours of unnecessary downtime, and the unfortunate 25 additional hours while the servers were shipped. This has been our longest downtime in the last year, and we hopefully won't see anything of this magnitude for quite a while.

It will also give us the ability to create some excellent diagrams and guides with 3d models of parts, engine bays etc.
Oh wait you don't have any 3d modeling experience???, No worries! You can contribute with a digital camera and a computer using free photo rendering software like autodesk 123D catch.
For a list of other free modeling software check out this post here: http://mazda626.net/...print-software/
Lastly if you have 3D Models you wish to upload simply drop them in the upload section here: http://mazda626.net/...model-database/

Fixing The Two Biggest Issues With The Forum

https://mazda626.net/topic/42204-fixing-the-two-biggest-issues-with-the-forum/?do=findComment&comment=347378

No drastic front end changes here, but were going to be doing some changes to fix two major issues that have been persistent for the last 2months - 1 year.

Email notifications: Not getting sent, not getting sent on time, not getting sent at all etc. We've had alot of email issues over the last year, and were switching to Mandrill (mailchimps relatively new mail delivery service). Also don't worry just because were switching over to this service doesn't mean your emails will be exposed to those pesky spammers. Issue discussion topic was here: http://mazda626.net/...-notifications/ Just as a sidenote emails might be a little slow for the first 24-48 hours, during this time we have limits until they can verify were not a spammer trying to use MailChimps service.

Fresh Content Not Showing Up: Some issues with posts not showing up right away. Due to a new html accelerator we enabled to reduce some of the load on the server logged in members are having some issues with not seeing posts show up right away. So well be fixing this very soon, by disabling this particular accelerator for members, and making it only be used by guests on the site. This was all content that was previously on snailmans old servers. We have a lot of good stuff now back live!
Example of some missing images restored!:
http://mazda626.net/topic/28799-strut-spring-replacement/
I'm still having some issues for images in threads like this: http://mazda626.net/topic/16070-hei-ignition-module-modificationinstallation/ because the images point to port 8080, but I should have those working later this weekend.
Enjoy everyone!
And a special thanks goes out to snailman of course for safeguarding this content, that we can now use and share again.

Reviews And How To's Competition #2 Aug To Nov - Mazda626.net 201

https://mazda626.net/topic/41828-reviews-and-how-tos-competition-2-aug-to-nov-mazda626net-201/?do=findComment&comment=343510

Since we had such an excellent turnout for this competition the first time around, with over 15 entries, were going to be running a 2nd How To Guides/Tutorials and Review Competition, back to back with the first one! Except this time each entrant will get a flat cash prize of $5.00 USD per how to via paypal. And at the end we will be giving away raffle style (4) Grand Prizes of $25.00 USD via electronic giftcard to RockAuto.com.
**UPdate since we didn't generate enough interest in this competition we will only be giving 5.00 per entry, no grand prizes, Sorry everyone.**
On November 2, 2012, we will be giving away $5.00 USD in gift-cards each and every entrant!
Each qualified entry will directly result in a $5.00 cash prize via paypal. For the grand prize this will work basically like a raffle you get one entry for every quality review or how to guide you write. Giftcards will be for any online store of your choice (as long as we can buy electronic gift-cards for them).
Rules:

The Tutorial or review must either be posted as a new thread in either the: Reviews Section or the Tutorials & How To Guides Section

Each How To Guide/Review must have a minimum of 3 pictures (Even if you make a youtube video you must provide still shot images with text to help people / google find it)

It must be unique to Mazda626.net (sorry no copy-pasta here!)

It must provide useful information (no how to tie my shoes DIY's)

To get an entry you should respond to this thread with a link to the review/how to article.

The Article/Guide must be written/posted between August 2nd and November 2, 2012.

We actually switched over from MaxCDN to Amazon Cloudfront which is why you might have had some minor rendering issues the past few days.
MaxCDN was nice, but it doesnt offer enough servers in australia / pacific-rim. So we switched to amazons cloudfront which has about 3 times the number of distribution centers. So the closer you are to one of the following cities the quicker the site should be for you now. I Also Added benchmarked load times of our site from cities I could test from.
I benchmarked just a few below: enjoy!
United States
Ashburn, VA (2)
Dallas/Fort Worth, TX (2) | 1.03 Seconds
Jacksonville, FL
Los Angeles, CA (2) | 2.05 seconds
Miami, FL
New York, NY (2) | 0.823 Seconds
Newark,
Palo Alto, CA
San Jose, CA
Seattle, WA
South Bend, IN
St. Louis, MO
Europe:
Amsterdam (2) | 1.5 Seconds
Dublin | 2.33 Seconds
Frankfurt (2) | 1.5 Seconds
London (2) | 2.56 Seconds
Milan
Paris (2)
Asia:
Hong Kong | 3.084 Seconds
Osaka | 3.18 Seconds
Singapore (2) | 3.48 Seconds
Sydney | 2.283 Seconds
Tokyo | 3.43 Seconds
South America:

My name is Gary, I'm doing some server work for the owners of the website so things may not respond or be sluggish from time to time but please bear with me as there is a big profile change on the server so a lot of things have to be reconfigured.
I have done the main bit so you should only see minor sluggish moments where I give services a restart to make the new changes live.
Kind regards.

Winners Announced:
1st Prize: Alucard
2nd Prize:TiberianX
3rd Prize: DJDevon3
4th Prize: MazdaMan1991
Methodology for choosing the winner:
As I mentioned I was going to completely randomly pick the winners, so what i did was I gave everyone 1 entry per each howtoguide submitted. We had 16 entries total(Which is awesome!). I then generated a random number next to each one in excel by using =rand(). I then COMPLETELY randomize it by sorting by the random column 14 times total (6 times, then 2 times, then 6 times, I hope you see what I did there ) and the enteries that fell into the 1st prize,2ndprize, etc slots were the winners.
I hope this doesn't discourage anyone from entering our other competitions here, we have another one starting TODAY, which will have rewards for every single entrant into the competition! Also I just wanted to say the community and site is extremely thankful for each and every how to, and that these often help far more people than you will ever know!
For sake of fairness/openness I'm attaching screenshots of the winners on the excel spreadsheet so you all know I didn't choose any favorites. I'm also going to PM the winners here today to ask them how they would like their giftcards.

Competition Rules
Since the How To Guides/Tutorials and Review threads are so helpful to everyone on the site(and our many guests each month). We want to encourage all of our members to keep writing them with a competition!

This will work basically like a raffle you get one entry for every quality review or how to guide you write. Giftcards will be for any online store of your choice (as long as we can buy electronic gift-cards for them)

It must provide useful information

To get an entry you should respond to this thread with a link to the review/how to article or send me a PM.

We Spent the last 6 hours or so recovering the backups, Luckily we only lost 2 days of data. We don't have reason to believe any passwords were stolen/cracked, but we advise that you do change your passwords(I'll send out a site wide email reminding users to do so). Sometimes we just have to make the best out of the worst situations, so in light of this major issue we will be completely overhauling security (i've already started to do so).
Temporarily, Uploading images/profile pictures will most likely not work. But we will get this resolved in the next day. The important thing is that the board is back up and running for business.
Thanks for your understanding and support everyone, no matter what happens this community will always stay going strong, and we have a very committed volunteer staff to keep the site alive!

Slight Category Reorganization

https://mazda626.net/topic/40773-slight-category-reorganization/?do=findComment&comment=331563

We've made some minor tweaks to the layout of the board, nothing major. Well be shifting over to the new server tonight around 6:00-8:00 PM EST.
At that time the old server / the board will become locked, with a message across the top apologizing for the downtime.
As only location(A record) not the nameserver is changing, I'm hoping downtime will be minimal. The actual move itself should take less than 15 minutes in total.
If your still stuck on the oldsite be sure to use the following commands in attempt to force your computer to update by using:

As for the new server, load times on average should just drop a 1 second per page for everyone, which is pretty significant :). More tuning will take place over the following weeks, but the new server will be much faster! Well if you haven't herd the internet was in an uproar yesterday, over This new SOPA bill, which could effectively kill thousands of major sites from google to mazda626.net in one swoop.
ANY infringing content could get our ip banned from the internet. Now we sure aren't a piracy website but we have ALOT of images, and its quite possible that some of those are potentially infringing. Now I don't know about you all, but I don't have time to sort through 300k and growing posts to hunt down potentially infringing content. Please help keep Mazda626.net alive and send a email to congress asking that they end this foolishness and kill this bill. It takes about 5 seconds. Be sure to ask your friends, and family to as well, this is not a joke.

We were originally going to move to "the cloud" but we found an even better deal and we will have our own dedicated server :) .
Specs:
Intel Xeon E3-1230 Sandy Bridge 3.2 Ghz (8 logical processing cores)
8 GB DDR3 ECC 1333 Memory
2 x 1000 GB SATA Hard Drive (In raid-1 Mirrored configuration)
1 Gbps Unmetered Bandwidth
5 IP Addresses
Dedicated IPMI (reboot, KVM and OS reloads)
Private network included
Its only costing us slightly more than what were paying for our current 1.25gb setup to the dedicated server listed above! Not too shabby eh? We now have even more room for future growth now.
FYI current specs (roughly the same price)
Virtual Private Server
1.13 Ghz CPU (1 logical processing core)
768 MB DDR3 ECC Ram
30GB Disk Space
??? Network Speed
2 IP Addresses
raw processing power were going from 1.13Ghz to a combined 25.6 Ghz
And Ram more than 8x the current amount. Chances are we won't be able to use all this power immediately, but we now have the mazda furai of servers!

Sidebar Fixed!

https://mazda626.net/topic/39991-sidebar-fixed/?do=findComment&comment=322035

Sidebar has been fixed early this morning everyone. Right now latest posts is setup to display 20 posts, might drop it to 15, but it is by far the most important sidebar block id say!
"status updates" are disabled as they seem to have a serious negative impact on performance. Also facebook sidebar block is fixed :)
Enjoy!

Upgraded Ipb

https://mazda626.net/topic/39926-upgraded-ipb/?do=findComment&comment=321488

I just performed the upgrade for IPB. It should look similar to before with some minor differences such as the reputation system.
Unfortunately, the hooks (or side bars) that we had before are not compatible. We are in the process of finding a replacement for the latest discussions.

And intermittent downtime for the past day or two. We should be good to go now.
I'm still playing with the caching system, so if you get any 500 internal errors or bad pageloads, please let us know asap, and well see what we can do.
We enabled a new caching system, so the site should be speedier than ever!

Even faster than tom cruise!
