I have a 98 mazda 626 5spd, recently the alternator went. I tried to replace it with my father, and it is the biggest pain ever. There is everything infront of this alternator and when we tried loosening all the bolts, one seems that it will not pull out far enough because it bumps into the fender well. The only option we seem to have right now is DRILLING INTO THE SHEET METAL!!! This can't be the only option, does anyone know how to take out the alternator, or where i can find steps online to do so?

Check the Hayne's Manual ($15, or you can actually check it out of your library) it will have step by step instructions and pictures on how to remove it.

you dot not have to remove the long bolt that bumps into the firewall, just loosen it a bit then you can remove the alternator by sliding it out of that bolt (with a pry bar) (the bolt will come with the distributor since the support is in a "U" form)

of course you must remove the other bolt that hold the alternator
